HBHA’s compost impact

Holchim Yarok, HBHA’s environmental advocacy club, has another project, and this one is their biggest yet. Composting has been at the forefront of Holchim Yarok’s efforts for years, and they have decided to take it to the next level. In previous years, HBHA subscribed to a composting service, but the expansion to the JCC has begun.

In the works is a large, three-bin compost system for the JCC and its members. The end goal is to incorporate composting into the daily life of J’goers, and hopefully, it will be completed within the next few months. This compost system will set the stage for a more environmentally sustainable JCC.

The process of establishing a new composting system is in its early phase. Holchim Yarok is set to meet with JCC facilities personnel in the coming weeks to smooth out the rough edges and fine-tune any areas of need.

The system is constructed with repurposed delivery pallets as an environmentally friendly option for compost bin walls. Pressure-treated lumber will provide a frame for the system in which the pallets will slide in. Galvanized steel deck screws will connect the system. The roofing panel and hinges will be placed at the top of the system to serve as a protective layer against the elements and allow the green matter inside the bin to heat up.

This is a huge step forward in the mission of Holchim Yarok, but more importantly for the JCC. Incorporating a compost system is one of the most important things our Jewish Community Center can do right now, and it is an honor for Holchim Yarok to be the ones to make it happen.
